Frequently Asked Questions About Drone Training and Certification
Why choose SkyMedia Training for drone courses?
SkyMedia Training is one of the few drone schools in Australia that offers 100% in-person, face-to-face training for both the theory and practical components of the course. Our home base is on the NSW Central Coast, just 45 minutes north of Sydney, but we regularly travel nationwide, conducting courses anywhere in Australia, including rural areas. With highly experienced, CASA-certified instructors, you’re guaranteed top-quality training that prepares you for real-world operations. Choose SkyMedia Training to get a head start in the commercial drone industry with Australia’s best drone professionals.
What is CASA, and why is it important for drone training?
The Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) is Australia’s air safety regulator, responsible for ensuring aviation safety standards are maintained. To fly drones commercially, you need CASA-approved certifications like the Remote Pilot Licence (RePL) and the Remote Operator Certificate (ReOC). CASA sets the rules for safe drone operations and ensures that all pilots meet strict safety and compliance standards.
What drone courses does SkyMedia Training offer?
We offer a variety of CASA-certified courses, including:
- Remote Pilot Licence (RePL) <7kg – Our flagship course, perfect for flying drones like the DJI Inspire 3.
- RePL <25kg – For operators of larger drones used in industries like agriculture and film production.
- ReOC Assistance Package – We guide businesses through the process of obtaining a Remote Operator Certificate.
- Chief Remote Pilot Training – Get certified to manage drone operations and comply with CASA regulations.
- Sub 2kg Commercial Course – For those looking to operate drones under 2kg commercially without a full RePL.
Additionally, we offer RePL upgrade courses, AROC (Aeronautical Radio Operator Certificate), and tailored corporate and school training programs.

What practical assessments are required for a ReOC?
To obtain a Remote Operator Certificate (ReOC), you’ll need to submit detailed documentation, including an Operations Manual and Operational Library, describing how your organisation will operate safely. CASA will assess these materials and conduct interviews with key personnel, such as the Chief Remote Pilot, to ensure they understand the rules and regulations. For drones up to 25kg, CASA may also require a practical flying test. While SkyMedia Training can’t perform the assessments, we offer guidance, advice, and support to help you prepare and succeed.
What is a UAV, RPA, or drone?
A UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle), also known as a RPA (Remotely Piloted Aircraft) or drone, is an aircraft operated without a pilot on board. Drones are used for various applications, including photography, inspections, and agriculture. They can be flown manually via a remote control or autonomously following pre-programmed flight paths. Drones are increasingly being used in commercial, recreational, and scientific industries.
What is a Remote Pilot Licence (RePL)?
A Remote Pilot Licence (RePL) allows you to operate drones commercially in Australia. It is required for flying drones over 2kg or outside standard operating conditions, such as flying near people or in controlled airspace. The RePL also allows you to work for a company that holds a Remote Operator Certificate (ReOC). Your RePL does not expire, so once you’re certified, you’re qualified for life.
Do I need anything besides an RePL to fly commercially?
Yes, in addition to an RePL, you’ll need either your own ReOC (Remote Operator Certificate) or work under a company that holds one. The ReOC permits you to operate drones commercially under advanced conditions, such as night flying, operating in controlled airspace, and flying drones over 2kg.
What is a Remote Operator Certificate (ReOC)?
An ReOC allows you or your business to operate drones commercially outside standard rules. It’s essential for flying near people, in controlled airspace, or at night. The ReOC involves submitting an Operations Manual and passing a CASA assessment. We offer a ReOC Assistance Package to help guide you through the application process and prepare the required documentation.
Do I need a licence to fly a drone under 2kg commercially?
If you’re flying a drone under 2kg commercially, you can operate in the Excluded Category, which doesn’t require a full RePL. However, there are strict operational limitations under this category. For more flexibility and fewer restrictions, we offer a Sub 2kg Commercial Course, which equips you with the knowledge and skills to fly smaller drones safely and legally.
What drone should I buy for commercial operations?
Choosing the right drone depends on the work you’re doing. SkyMedia Training is an approved drone seller, offering professional advice and tailored recommendations based on your needs. Whether you need a transportable drone for inspections, a camera drone for media production, or a heavier model for agricultural work, we can help. Will completing the RePL course help me get a job?
Yes! Obtaining your Remote Pilot Licence (RePL) is a key qualification for jobs in industries like construction, agriculture, surveying, and media. Many companies use drones commercially, and having an RePL can give you a competitive edge. Visit job boards like Seek for drone pilot opportunities, or connect with companies operating under a ReOC to increase your chances of employment.
Do I need an AROC to operate a drone near controlled airspace?
Yes, to operate near controlled airspace, you’ll need an Aeronautical Radio Operator Certificate (AROC). This certification allows you to communicate with air traffic control, ensuring the safety of your drone operations near airports. SkyMedia Training offers an AROC course as part of our RePL training or as a standalone certification.
Can SkyMedia Training conduct drone courses anywhere in Australia?
Absolutely! SkyMedia Training is based on the NSW Central Coast, but we offer nationwide training, including rural and remote locations. Our team can deliver face-to-face courses anywhere across the country, ensuring you get hands-on, practical training wherever you’re located.
Can I fly my drone at night?
Flying drones at night requires special approval under an ReOC (Remote Operator Certificate). SkyMedia Training can help you obtain the necessary approvals and prepare the documentation needed to operate safely and legally after dark. If you’re operating a drone under standard operating conditions (Excluded Category), you must fly during daylight hours only.
Are there any prerequisites to the RePL course?
No prior experience is required for our RePL course, making it accessible to beginners.
Do I need insurance to fly drones commercially?
While it’s not mandated, it is highly recommended. Public liability insurance protects you in case of accidents or property damage during your drone operations. We suggest securing the right coverage to safeguard your business and equipment.
Can I operate under another company’s ReOC?
Yes, you can. It is completely legal to operate under another company’s Remote Operator Certificate (ReOC), as long as the company holding the ReOC manages the operation and ensures compliance with CASA regulations. This is a common practice in the drone industry.
Can I fly my drone Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS)?
Yes, but BVLOS operations require additional CASA approvals and safety procedures. SkyMedia Training can guide you through the process of obtaining these approvals and preparing the required documentation for safe and legal operations beyond visual line of sight.
